LONDON—Researchers at the Technical University of Eindhoven have developed a wireless temperature sensor that is powered by millimeter wavelength radio waves that are also used for communications.

Eindhoven student Hao Gao was due to receive a Ph.D. earlier this month for his thesis in which he discusses his development of the sensor that has an area of 2 square millimeters and weighs 1.6mg. The sensor is made using a 65nm CMOS manufacturing process.
A specially developed wireless router communicates with the sensor, which has an antenna on chip and picks up both energy and information from the millimeter wave signals. The current version of the sensor has a range of 2.5cm but researchers hope to extend this to a meter within a year.

The autonomous nature of the temperature sensor means it can be put behind plasterboard or included in a screed of concrete or paint.
The sensor stores the energy received and once there is enough switches on, measures the temperature and sends a signal to the router. Each temperature is indicated by a slightly different frequency at which the return signal can be sent. The router determines the temperature by the distinctive frequency.
The same technology could be used with other sensor types, such as motion, light and humidity. The tiny size of the silicon chip is expected to keep sensor costs down to around 20 cents in volume.
The title of Hao Gao’s thesis is Fully Integrated Ultra-Low Power mm-Wave Wireless Sensor Design Methods. The IC research was done in the Mixed-Signal Microelectronics group and also involved university groups specialised in electromagnetics and signal processing systems as well as the Center of Wireless Technology.

Sony may further cement its dominance in the market of
smartphone camera components by acquiring Toshiba's sensor business.
Amid an ongoing corporate restructuring, Toshiba is nearing a deal
with Sony to sell off its sensor division, according to a report today from Reuters. Sony is far and away the leading supplier of CMOS image sensors used to power smartphone cameras and some DSLR units with a 40.2 percent share of the market in 2014.The acquisition of Toshiba's division would put Sony in an even stronger position against competitors like Samsung.
Sony's smartphone business hasn't been doing well, but the company has a strong grip on the smartphone camera market. Twice this year Sony expanded its image sensor plants in Nagasaki and Yamagata, costing it more than $1.2 billion. Yet its customers, like China's Xiaomi and Apple, have turned Sony's sensor business into a blockbuster success with sales growing 40 percent last year.
Sony is taking over the image sensor business
The picture is gloomier for Toshiba. The company is undergoing a corporate accounting scandal after revelations that it overstated earnings to the tune of $1.3 billion over the last seven years. After the resignation of CEO Hisao Tanaka, interim chief executive and chairman Masashi Muromachi laid out a restructuring plan to reform the company. The image sensor sale would be one of the first moves in that process.

This can be done with the laser at a distance of ten thousand or more meters from the sensor in conditions that electronics don't work well (like at the bottoms of oil wells).

Researchers at Eindhoven
University of Technology claim that such sensors could help advance the
nascent IoT industry. Increasingly tiny chips that measure temperature,
light, and air pollution are being deployed around cities and in smart
homes and offices. One the biggest hurdles is to make these sensors
battery-free.
"We don't want hundreds of these sensors
around our homes if we have to go around swapping the batteries all the
time," said lead researcher Prof Peter Baltus. The sensor
developed by his team measures temperature but similar sensors that
measure light, movement and humidity could also be developed.
The sensor
measures just 2 sq mm and weighs 1.6mg. It contains an antenna that
captures energy from a wireless router, it stores the energy and, once
there is enough, is able to measure the temperature and send a signal to
the router.
Currently the chip has a tiny range -
just 2.5cm but the researchers are confident that this can be extended
to 1m. "Theoretically it can work up to 5m," said Prof Baltus.
The sensor
can operate beneath a layer of paint, plastic or concrete - making it
ideal for incorporation into buildings. It is also cheap and, according
to Prof Baltus, the cost of an individual chip would be around 20 cents.
According to Gartner, the Internet of
Things market is set to explode. It predicts that cities will have 1.6
billion connected things, 518 million smart buildings, and one billion
homes in 2016.

1. Highly reliable measurement
The TDLS8000’s laser module includes reference cell board that improves the reliability of absorption peak detection, which is an important step in the spectral area method. The CPT007B GPIO switch replacement
device enables developers to quickly replace up to seven mechanical
buttons with capacitive touch sensors with no firmware development. The
GPIO interfaces provide direct on/off sensor status to the host processor.
The CPT112S capacitive sense I2C device features up to 12 sensor
inputs to simplify the addition of capacitive sense functionality for
touch-based interfaces. The I2C interface provides an easy way to track
the status of touch sensors and an interrupt pin can wake the host
processor from sleep after a proximity touch detection.
Both capacitive touch controllers
support advanced features such as moisture immunity, wake-on proximity,
touch time-out, mutually exclusive touch qualifier and buzzer feedback
for an enhanced user experience. The CPT112S device also offers a slider
control option.
Based on Silicon Labs’ proven, patented
capacitive sensing technology, the TouchXpress controllers provide
best-in-class drop-in solutions that ease touch interface development
for embedded designers of all skill levels. No firmware development,
programming or capacitive sense expertise is needed to implement
capacitive touch interfaces based on TouchXpress technology. No external
components are required, and developers can easily configure and

Amada Miyachi America Inc. has announced the LF series of fiber lasers for precision microwelding.
The LF series can be focused to spot
sizes as small as 10 μm, and offers precise control of pulse width and

An internal air-to-water cooling
mechanism ensures high power and pulse-to-pulse stability irrespective
of ambient air temperature. The lasers may be operated in either
modulated or CW mode, offering all the features necessary for control of
the weld, including pulse shaping with up to 10 segments, and seam mode
with ramp-up and ramp-down capabilities.

Laser Quantum is recognised as a leader in the production and development of Ti:Sapphire lasers
with GHz repetition rates. Recently Laser Quantum cooperated with A·P·E
Angewandte Physik und Electronic, Berlin. They have evaluated the
performance of the taccor laser with the HarmoniXX SHG second harmonic
generator to offer frequency doubled light at 1GHz.
Laser Quantum’s taccor range of ultrafast lasers
has proven to be beneficial in applications such as multi-photon
excitation microscopy, frequency comb generation and as part of
pump-probe spectroscopy equipment due to their high repetition rate and
high photon flux combined with low peak powers.
These applications however all rely on
using the fundamental emission wavelengths of the Ti:Sapphire crystal
centred around 800nm. Since the taccor has never been completely
evaluated as a primary photon source for use with frequency doubling
equipment, other applications such as picosecond ultrasound and
time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that require high energy
photons have been unable to benefit from the taccor’s capabilities. In
the case of time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the high energy
photons are needed to excite then ionise the sample. The high repetition
rate would offer significantly higher resolution measurements and speed
up measurements.
In collaboration with A·P·E Angewandte
Physik und Electronic, Berlin the taccor power was evaluated as a
primary source for use with the HarmoniXX SHG frequency doubling unit
and was shown to deliver output powers up to 250mW.
The taccor has shown to have benefits in
a number of applications due to its unique high repetition rate, but
when combined with the HarmoniXX SHG, a second harmonic converter from
A·P·E, the advantages of the GHz repetition rate can be successfully
used in applications that require powerful mode-locked light at the SHG
wavelengths of Ti:sapphire.

FB Chain took delivery of the UK’s first robotic loading arm by Halter cnc
Automation this summer to support one of its anchor bolt milling
machines. This investment has significantly improved FB Chain’s ability
to provide a quick turnaround for customers even at short notice.
Having seen the Halter LoadAssistant in action at several reference
plants in Germany, FB Chain became the first company to employ one in
the UK in June. Based in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, FB Chain has been
manufacturing and supplying leaf chain, anchor bolts, pins and pulleys
for forklift trucks and other materials handling equipment for 30 years
and is the UK Fork Lift Truck Association’s 2015 Supplier of the Year.
“Even in mainland Europe this technology is fairly new – there are
less than 20 of them working in manufacturing facilities across the
continent – so this was a calculated risk for us. And it has paid off,”
manufacturing manager Nigel Eame says.
Since its installation the robotic loading arm, including software
from leading robotics company Fanuc, has increased output from its
assigned cnc milling machine by at least 150 leaf chain anchor bolts per day with minimal supervision.
“Like many businesses, demand at FB Chain fluctuates and having too
many or too few staff on shift affects the level of service we are able
to offer our customers. The new robot has enabled us to ramp up
production quickly without having to find extra staff and its safety
mechanisms means that it can even be left to run overnight if required,”
he says.
FB Chain aims to reduce its lead times to less than four weeks and
with the help of the Halter LoadAssistant this goal is becoming closer
and closer. The company has also recently upgraded its bar-fed turning
centres with quadruple tooling, which can likewise be run safely
overnight, to further shorten customers’ lead times. Next year the
company plans to install a fully automated manufacturing cell for its
leaf chain anchor blocks.
“At FB Chain we are constantly reviewing and optimising our
manufacturing processes and equipment for the benefit of our customers.
Our promise is to provide consistently high quality materials handling
chain and associated parts at our customers’ convenience – and
continuous improvements are required to guarantee this,” Eames
concludes.

Laser Quantum is recognised as a leader in the production and development of Ti:Sapphire lasers
with GHz repetition rates. Recently Laser Quantum cooperated with A·P·E
Angewandte Physik und Electronic, Berlin. They have evaluated the
performance of the taccor laser with the HarmoniXX SHG second harmonic
generator to offer frequency doubled light at 1GHz.
Laser Quantum’s taccor range of ultrafast lasers
has proven to be beneficial in applications such as multi-photon
excitation microscopy, frequency comb generation and as part of
pump-probe spectroscopy equipment due to their high repetition rate and
high photon flux combined with low peak powers.
These applications however all rely on
using the fundamental emission wavelengths of the Ti:Sapphire crystal
centred around 800nm. Since the taccor has never been completely
evaluated as a primary photon source for use with frequency doubling
equipment, other applications such as picosecond ultrasound and
time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that require high energy
photons have been unable to benefit from the taccor’s capabilities. In
the case of time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the high energy
photons are needed to excite then ionise the sample. The high repetition
rate would offer significantly higher resolution measurements and speed
up measurements.
In collaboration with A·P·E Angewandte
Physik und Electronic, Berlin the taccor power was evaluated as a
primary source for use with the HarmoniXX SHG frequency doubling unit
and was shown to deliver output powers up to 250mW.
The taccor has shown to have benefits in
a number of applications due to its unique high repetition rate, but
when combined with the HarmoniXX SHG, a second harmonic converter from
A·P·E, the advantages of the GHz repetition rate can be successfully
used in applications that require powerful mode-locked light at the SHG
wavelengths of Ti:sapphire.
