As part of Toshiba's restructuring plan the company appears to be about to withdraw from white led production by late March 2016 and the company intends to sell its image sensor business to Sony for approximately $165 million.
The restructuring plan for Toshiba's discrete component business follows an independent investigation committee review which revealed the biggest accounting scandal in Toshiba's 140-year history. The committee reported that the company had overstated its operating profits by about $1.2 billion cumulatively over the period covered by the fiscal years 2008 to 2014.

Toshiba aims to restructure its discrete components, LSI and optic business. The company has initiated the restructure with the sale of the CMOS sensor business to Sony. The business transaction, which involves Toshiba’s CMOS sensor production line in Kyushu, Japan, and 12-inch silicon wafer production capacity is expected to be completed by March 2016.

Toshiba's system LSI semiconductor business is responsible for its image sensor product line, which are used in consumer electronics such as smartphones and digital cameras.

Sony is the leading supplier of CMOS image sensors used by China's Xiaomi and India's Micromax in their smartphones.
