SMI Introduces Accurate Pressure Sensors for Medical Market



Silicon Microstructures Inc. (SMI), a subsidiary of German chipmaker Elmos Semiconductor AG, has rolled out a digital, medium pressure sensor microelectromechanical system (MEMS) and gauge sensor family designed for use in the medical, industrial and consumer markets.

The SM3041 series has better than 1% initial accuracy and less than 1% accuracy shift over life, which SMI claims makes the sensors among the most stable medium-pressure sensors on the market. SMI has developed the pressure sensors with a special focus on the medical market for ventilators, oxygenators, wound therapy and fluid evacuation; the industrial market for gas flow, pneumatic, gages and pressure switches; and the consumer market for sports equipment and appliances.

SMI says the pressure sensor can be combined with a signal-conditioning ASIC in a single package for simplicity of use. The pressure sensor can then be mounted directly on a standard printed circuit board, and a calibrated pressure signal can be acquired from the digital interface. As a result, this eliminates the need for additional circuitry, such as a compensation network or microcontroller containing a custom- correction algorithm, the company says.

The SM3041 series was manufactured using pressure transducer technology and CMOS mixed-signal processing technology to produce digital, fully signal-conditioned output. It also includes an I2C digital communication interface for ease of design and comes in package configurations with dual vertical ports, dual horizontal ports or a single vertical port.
