On 22 Sep., Northeastern University(NEU), CAS Shenyang Institute of
Automation and Shenyang SIASUN Robot & Automation Co., Ltd signed a
contract on the establishment of the first robotic science and
engineering institute in China, acting as a landmark of
industry-university-research cooperation robot institute in Northeastern
University, gongkong.ofweek.com reported.
The institute is a
joint development between NEU Shenyang Institute of Automation and
SIASUN Robot & Automation Co., Ltd. Zhao Ji - principal of
Northeastern University, Shi Zhelin - deputy director of CAS Shenyang
Institute of Automation and Qu Daokui - president of SIASUN are
representatives of the three sides, singing on the agreement.
According
to the agreement, the three sides will make full use of their
advantages to explore new way of innovative robotic education, to
promote innovation in robot technology, thus to guarantee the intellect
support for the world leading robot industrial base in Shenyang.
It
is said that Northeastern University will transfer 40 key members in
academy and teachers from the existing IT & Engineering Institute
and Mechanical Engineering & Automation Institute as the teaching
foundation of Robot Institute. It is anticipated that 10 famous scholars
and specialists will be hired outside to form a high-level
international teaching team.
Robot science and engineering
institute will recruit 500 students including 25-30% graduate students
and 70-75% undergraduate students. Core curriculums include Artificial
Intelligence and Machine Learning, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Sensors
and Signal Conditioning, Machine Vision and Image Understanding, Robot
Mechanical Design and Optimization, Robot Kinematics and Dynamics,
Bio-mechanical Electronic Engineering, Robot Operating System, etc.
Northeastern University is one of the early institutions focused on the
research of intelligent robot in China. It began the research in the
late 20th century and has developed many influential achievements, such
as soccer robot, C-Leg , rehabilitation robot, flying robot, robotic arm
hand-eye coordination system and computer game-playing.
China has
been the largest market for industrial robot for two years. The sales
volume of industrial robot is 57 thousand pieces in 2014, occupying more
than a quarter of the global sales volume. There is so large demand in
China, however, Chinese robot manufacturing situation is really
worrying: the overall technical level is low and the independence
R&D capacity is weak. The trend of intelligent robot development is
inevitable, China is transferring from 'Made in China' to 'Intelligently
made in China'.
