Since the latter half of the year 2011, Chinese machine tool industry
has suffered from a shrunk demand and sluggish oversea market. The
competition between domestic machine tool enterprises tends to be
increasingly intensified.
"The biggest soft spot of Chinese
machine tool industry is that the industrial structure stagnates on the
middle and low end for a long term, and fails to reach the middle and
high end." said Mr. Chen Huiren, the standing vice chairman and
secretary-general of Chinese Machine Tool & Machine Builders'
Association.
Transformation and upgrade being the only way
"Currently, the machine tool industry still stays in the descending
section as a whole, and the descending pressure is further increasing;
some sub-industries which once acted powerful, now are showing
descending tendency." Mr. Chen Huiren said that in the first half of
this year, under the influence of continuously sluggish market demands,
the machine tool industry is obviously running towards inertial decline,
with the industry's major economic indicators declining continuously
and the scale of losses ceaselessly enlarged.
According to the
data feedback from key related enterprises of Chinese Machine Tool &
Machine Builders' Association, in June, nearly 70 percent enterprises
have suffered from year-on-year reduction in terms of main business
income, total industrial output value and sales value, among which
nearly 40 percent are loss-making enterprises.
"Though the
total market demand of machine tool industry obviously decreases, the
marketization of demand upgrading is increasingly evident." Mr. Chen
Huiren said that the demand upgrade of Chinese machine tool consumption
market mainly consists of upgrade in automation, customization and
gear-shifting.
The continuous upgrade of market demand
structure has also retro-forced the machine tool enterprises to quicken
their transformation and upgrade. Data shows that, output value and
numerical control rate of metal processing machine tools increase
continuously, with the main reason being the sharp product output
decrease of non-numerical control machine tools.
Chen Huiren
said that, the newly-developing manufacturing industry which is driven
mainly by consumption, now is rapidly catching up with and even
surpassing the traditional heavy chemical industry demands which are
driven mainly by investment. During this process, different market
subsections, industry subsections and enterprise running is further
subdivided. Seen from the whole industry, not only the metal processing
machine tools, measuring tools, functional components and numerical
control system are also faced with the substantial demand shrink of
general-purpose low-end product market.
Both ends, production
and demand, are gradually marching towards the middle and high end which
has accelerated the "bluff-shaped" decline of general-purpose machine
tools' production and sales volume. Expedite the upgrade of product
structure has also become the primary task for machine tool industry to
deal with the change of market demand structure.
To get smart
At Fourteenth China International Machine Tool Show recently held, the
intelligent machine tool system named "I5 intelligent numerical control
system" exhibited by SMTCL became one of the most eye-catching products.
Guan Xiyou, chairman of SMTCL, said that SMTCL has determined to
transit from the "industrial manufacturer" to "provider of intelligent
manufacturing solutions".
Relevant experts point out that the
numerical control equipment in the 21st century will be the system with
certain intelligence. At present, there have been more than one machine
tool enterprises integrating concepts such as "intelligence", "cloud" to
their products, and the element of intelligence is embedded into
various aspects of numerical system.
Along with the continuous
upgrade of user demands and the popularization and application of modern
technological means, automation has achieved further development on its
original basis, especially the domestic robots which burgeon like
bamboo shoots after a spring rain.
GSK launched the "diligent"
RJ-series robot. With compact structure, faster moving pace and higher
cost performance, it's applicable to the processing automation of many
kinds of machine tools including automobiles and milling. The powerful
transfer robot launched by Dalian Gona is vertical multi-joint sis-axis
robot. With lightweight design and the realization of optimal mechanical
structure design, its wrist can carry 165kg of components. The 3C
drilling and tapping central production line equipped with robot
launched Huazhong Numeral Control is a set of drilling and tapping
central robot automation overall program.
"The proper attitude
towards internet should be positive integration." Chen Huiren said that
the essence of internet thought and big data is to provide more advanced
tools for enterprises to improve their production efficiency, to
achieve closer communication with users and to facilitate information
acquisition. It's an important and effective means of realizing the
upgrade of traditional industry, which also means that, for
equipment-manufacturing industry like that of machine tools, internet
can only be the tool and means of development, and the principal part
can only be the manufacturing per se, otherwise, it's equal to put the
cart before the horse.
Diversified competition
In May of this year, JIER Machine-Tool Group signed the order for large
fast punching line with Ford, USA. This is the eighth automobile
punching line provided by JIER Machine-Tool Group for Ford Company.
It has offered 8 sets of high-speed punching line for 4 factories of
Ford Motor Company in the USA, which is a typical case of Chinese
machine tool equipment going into international market, and indicates
the punching equipment of JIER Machine Tool has already reached the
international advanced level in terms of technology, quality and
reliability.
For a long time, due to limited technological
level, high-end machine tools mainly relied on import, while low-end
machine tools had relatively small profit margin with its excess
capacity and inventory. Furthermore, due to severe homogeneous
competition within the industry, low-end market even breed a trend of
malign rate war, in which some enterprises used unfair competition means
such as selling at a price below cost, to get market shares. This
situation also led to the result that, in the past decade, there were
very few Chinese machine tool enterprises managed to "achieve" high-end
products and subdivided market.
"Although many domestic
high-end machine tools are basically equipped with indicators such as
five-axis linkage, turn-milling combination and large-specification
gantry, etc. required by the functions of high-end products, they
usually 'imitate the appearance only and neglect the intrinsic quality'.
And for this reason, they tend to fall behind in terms of performance
and have large gap with foreign peers from the aspect of precision,
speed, static characteristics, dynamic characteristics and reliability."
said Chen Huiren.
"On the whole, market demands for machine
tools have been transited to middle and high-end field. Therefore,
market space of general-purpose machine tools will be smaller and
smaller and competition in middle and high-end market will be
increasingly fierce. Domestic machine tool manufacturers urgently need
to change their attitude of seeking quick success and instant benefits,
abandon their short-sighted behaviors, focus on certain field to make
technological breakthrough and product research, and strive to promote
their products to middle and high end." said Chen Huiren.
