Established in 2007 as the foremost global gathering on science, technology and innovation, the Annual Meeting of the New Champions convenes the next generation of fast-growing enterprises shaping the future of business and society together with leaders from major multinationals as well as government, media, academia and civil society. This year is the 9th annual meeting, with the theme “Charting a New Course for Growth”. More than 1,500 business, politicians, academic and media leaders from more than 90 countries will participate in the three-day meeting.
At the session focusing on the future of manufacturing, Dr. Gu said: “Nowadays both industrial and consumer products are experiencing even faster upgrading and updating, while end users are putting higher requirements on the quality and personalization of products. Under the megatrend of Internet of Things, Services and People, smart technologies like industrial robots increasingly help the manufacturing industry shorten production cycles, improve productivity and product consistency, and cope with market challenges in an efficient and flexible way."
ABB has been advocating Internet of Things, Services and People to help customers integrate equipments, services and people via the Internet, control and communication systems. Industrial robots equipped with sensors and industrial software are undoubtedly playing an important role in the process.
When talking about the relationship between humans and robots in the manufacturing industry, Dr. Gu said: "Industrial robots are not simply used to replace human workers but to free people from backbreaking, boring and even dangerous tasks. In the process, both enterprises and employees will benefit together. At present, the new era of the “human-robot collaboration” has arrived, and ABB is leading this significant change."
In April 2015, ABB introduced a two-arm 14-axis industrial robot called YuMi, the world's first truly collaborative robot. With its human-friendly design, YuMi work collaboratively with humans. Industrial robots which were once imprisoned in "cages" because of safety reasons will co-work with human companions side by side in the open environment to complete the small parts assembly and many other operations together.
ABB robotics business established its R&D center and production base in Shanghai in 2005. To date, ABB Robotics Shanghai has produced more than 40,000 units. In August 2015, ABB set up ABB Robotics (Zhuhai) Ltd. in Zhuhai National Hi-Tech Industrial Development District, to support southern China, the region with the most developed manufacturing and light industries, to accelerate manufacturing transformation and upgrading.
ABB robotic products and solutions have been widely used in welding, assembly, painting, finishing, fashioning, packaging, palletizing and other operations in automobile manufacturing, food and beverage, computers and electronics industries, helping hundreds of Chinese customers to lower operating costs and improve productivity, supporting China’s manufacturing industry to achieve the historical shift from “big” to “strong” under the "Made in China 2025" blueprint.
ABB is a Global 500 company and a leader in power and automation technologies. They enable utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in 100 countries and employs about 140,000 people. ABB has a full range of business activities in China, including R&D, manufacturing, sales and services, with 19,000 employees, 39 local companies, and an extensive sales and service network across 126 cities.
