In 2014, Apple's purchase amount of mobile sensor reached to almost 50% of the total while Samsung occupied 20% above. But IHS predicts that Chinese mobile OEM will replace Apple and Samsung by 2019. According to IHS, market share of Apple has been declined since the 47% in 2014, which will be reduced to 34% in 2019; in the same time market share of Samsung will be reduced from 23% to 15%.
In the mean time, market share of Chinese OEM dominated by Xiaomi has grown from 20% in 2014 to 40% in 2019.
Samsung will encounter great challenge because its shipment continues to fall in a growing market. Samsung will meet competitive pressure from Apple in high-end market and challenge from Chinese competitors in low and mid-range mobile sensor market.
IHS said that in order to differentiate their own mobile sensor products, Chinese OEM are willing to try different new products, which makes China an ideal market for sensor suppliers who are trying to march into mobile sensor field. The Chinese government's support further drives the growth of local electronic component manufacturing and purchasing. However, at the moment only a few suppliers can provide limited product portfolio of sufficient demand and quality. It includes AACTechnologies, GoerTek, MEMSIC, QST and some startups in China.
