Why CNC?
1) Same part can be reproduced to the same degree of accuracy any number of times once the CNC program has been coded.
2) High speed, accuracy, efficiency, and repeatability.
3) Reduction in machining times and good tool life monitoring.
4) Increase in production rate.
5) It decreases the human work. Easily produces complex shaped workpieces.
Advancements in CNC
1) Now, there is no need to code the progrm by us.The design softwares (Auto CAD, Catia, Pro E) can generate the code by them selves during designing phase only.
2) With increase in the automation, quality increased tremendously.(you can reach accuracy in microns easily)
CNC stands for Computer Numerically Controlled. Modern production machines have replaced human machinists with a computer to operate the controls of the machines. This results in a higher rate of higher quality product on a continuing basis. Machines don't call in sick, take vacation, take lunch breaks, make mistakes,…etc., etc.
All kinds of production machines are now CNC and instead of calling them milling machines or lathes, they are sometimes referred to as machining centers since they can perform the jobs of several machines in one device.
They will automatically change the part, rotating it as needed to use whatever tool is needed to machine the piece. When the part is completed, it is automatically removed and a new part set in place and the machining operation repeated.
These tools can check to see if the cutting tool is worn and correct for the wear during machining and eventually replace it when it is worn too far to do the job.
CNC production results in very high quality products produced on a 24/7/365 schedule resulting in relatively low cost for a high quality product.
CNC was very expensive when first introduced, but mass production of the machines has brought the price down till it is affordable by smaller factories.
The old Tool and Die level machinists are still needed to set the parameters for the machine, but nowadays, computer programmers and repairmen are needed to keep the CNC machines programmed and running.
